Celibré offers two topical programs to safely and effectively treat (and control) problem Melasma. We are also currently conducting research trials that in the future may allow us to use lasers to effectively eliminate Melasma.

Melasma Treatment Before and After Pictures
Our two Melasma treatments use a combination of topical products to ensure the best possible outcome. The program we will use for your situation depends on what treatments you have tried in the past, your skin type (Asian, Hispanic, Caucasian, African American), and your life stage in women (premenopausal, perimenopausal or postmenopausal). Our Melasma treatment programs, even our treatments that do and do not utilize hydroquinone, use depigmentation agents in conjunction with exfoliating treatments like glycolic acid chemical peels.
The primary difference between the traditional Melasma removal methodology of using just a hydroquinone product and our treatment programs at Celibré is that we understand the importance of thinning the stratum corneum (outer layer of dead skin cells) through exfoliation, which increases absorption of the depigmentation agents. Further, we are acutely aware of the FDA’s warning to limit the use of hydroquinone to a three- to four-month period before having the patient washout for another 3-4 months when hydroquinone should not be used.
One of the depigmentation products we use for Melasma treatment is Cosmelan; a new, advanced depigmentation program that does not contain hydroquinone. Cosmelan consists of several high-strength depigmentation compounds that safely and effectively inhibit pigment development associated with Melasma. Because Cosmelan can be used without interruption, it is an excellent alternative for people who have used hydroquinone and do not want to continue using it, or for people who cannot use hydroquinone.
Celibré’s depigmentation program does use a hydroquinone active ingredient typically between 4% - 6% solution (over the counter products contain a maximum of 4%). The Celibré depigmation process uses prescription-strength hydroquinone (currently up to 6%), and is different than other bleaching programs because of our in-office chemical peels that increase absorption of the active ingredients. During the period in between hydroquinone treatments (due to FDA advisory we do not keep our patients on hydroquinone more than three months at a time), we utilize a different topical depigmentation product that does not contain hydroquinone. It is our belief that alternating our patients on and off of Hydroquinone is the safest, most effective way to use the product for the long term.
At Celibre, we offer two melasma treatment plans. Although it is impossible to determine which plan a patient may respond to best, it is encouraging for our patients to know that there are options. Melasma patients must realize that their condition is considered chronic in nature. The goal is improvement and control through the use of effective products/treatments and diligent sun avoidance.
