Many different types of hair exist, and it comes in all colors, shapes, and sizes. It is important to know that hair in different areas of the body has different physical characteristics, growth cycles and follicle depths. All of these factors affect how we treat unwanted hair, and the expected results achieved from laser hair removal treatment.

Some Causes of Unwanted Hair

Unwanted hair can be caused or worsened by such factors as gender, genetics, race and age. While excess facial hair is closely related to your genetic background, oftentimes, unwanted hair growth increases with hormonal changes due to age, pregnancy, puberty, and menopause. It is also important for men to note that unwanted hair can be as problematic for men as it is for women.

The Growth Cycle of the Hair

Hair growth involves three different cycles: Anagen, Catagen, and Telogen. These cycles are important because they affect the outcome of your laser hair removal program. When hair is in the Telogen or resting phase, the target for the laser (melanin at the base of the follicle) is not present. During the Telogen phase, hair removal will not occur. For permanent hair removal via laser treatment, hair must be in the Anagen or growth phase when the treatment is performed. Because of this, the time between laser hair removal treatments needs to match the length of the hair growth cycle for the area of the body being treated as closely as possible. Factors that can influence the hair growth cycle include age, ethnicity, gender, medication, hormones, and hair location on the body. There is no single formula for estimating hair growth cycles exactly, but through consultation this cycle can be approximated.

The Anagen phase is the active growth period for the hair. Pigmentation (melanin) content is highest during this phase, which causes rapid growth. Laser hair removal treatments work best during this phase because of the higher melanin content.

The Catagen phase occurs at the end of the Anagen phase and is a short transition stage that signals the end of the active growth of a hair. This phase lasts for about two- to three-weeks. During this time, blood flow to the hair is cut off through the dermal papilla.

The Telogen phase is the resting period for the hair follicle. At any given time, 10- to 15-percent of all hair is in the Telogen phase. This phase lasts for about 100 days for scalp hair, and much longer for eyebrow, eyelash, arm and leg hair.

How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser Hair Removal permanently reduces unwanted hair by causing a small thermal trauma at the base (or bulb) of the hair follicle. The heat of the laser damages microscopic blood vessels that feed the follicle with blood, while preventing injury to surrounding tissue. The small thermal injury is created by the laser renders the hair follicle unable to re grow, and permanent hair removal results.

Depending on the skin type of the patient, Celibré Medical uses one of several different lasers to accomplish permanent hair removal. Choosing the right laser is an important factor in the effectiveness of your laser hair removal treatment. For instance, the correct laser for African American skin types is not necessarily the right choice for pale Northern European skin types. Fortunately, we have a number of laser options available when it comes to choosing the correct one for your laser hair removal procedure.

Laser hair removal is most effective when multiple treatments are performed. Because the hair in the area being treated is not always in the Anagen phase, multiple treatments are required to achieve the intended results. Typically, at least six laser hair removal treatments are performed.
