What is a Birthmark?
Pigmented birthmarks (such as cafe-au-lait birthmarks) are pigmented spots that are usually present from the time of birth. Birthmarks are comprised of giant melanosomes (types of cells) that contain an abnormally high density of melanin – which is the pigment that creates the color in skin.

The Causes of Pigmented Birthmarks
It is unknown why some of us have these birthmarks and some of us do not, but it is accepted that birthmark occurrence is higher in darker skinned individuals including African Americans, Hispanics and Asians.
Congenital moles (nevi). A birthmark that varies in shape and size. Most are dark or brown colored and they can be found on all areas of the body. If you have moles of this type that are raised, we may not be able to treat them since we normally do not treat any raised lesions (please see our Birthmark Removal Treatment Plan page).
Cafe-au-lait spots. A birthmark that is typically flat and smooth, often oval shaped and light brown or medium brown in color. Café-au-lait birthmarks are often located on the torso, buttocks or legs.
