Acne occurs when a healthy hair follicle becomes blocked by skin and hair cells that were not shed properly and became stuck together in the hair follicle shaft. This prevents oil produced by the sebaceous gland and P.acnes bacteria from exiting through the surface of the skin, which results in inflammation and an acne condition.

In other cases, increased hormonal activity will stimulate the sebaceous gland to produce more oil. When this happens, the sebaceous gland becomes enlarged because of the increased oil production, in similar fashion to the way our muscles enlarge with physical exercise. This condition allows for more oil production, which allows for additional sebum plugs to develop. When the size of the sebaceous gland increases (following hormonal changes), it allows us to target it more easily (and shrink the acne) with lasers.

Traditional acne therapies, including oral and topical drugs, can have mixed results. Accutane may have harmful side effects or you may become resistant to antibiotics.
