ACNE SCAR REMOVAL

There are many different types of acne scars, and acne scars can develop in different ways. Textured acne scars can appear when dense, fibrous tissue develops beneath the skin’s surface. This fibrous tissue often develops in response to acne trauma and forms beneath the skin during the healing process. Repeated trauma from pimples and cystic acne in the area causes the collagen and elastin to be replaced by irregularly shaped fibrous tissue, which causes a textured acne scar.

There are several different types of textured acne scar types including raised (hypertrophic), rolling/shallow, pitted or "boxcar." Boxcar scarring is defined by sharp edges and deep grooves, making them particularly challenging but possible to treat.

Pigmented acne scars are another common type of acne scarring. Pigmented, or colored acne scars, occur from inflammation associated with the healing process. The body’s inflammatory response to acne formation brings either red (in the cause of light skinned patients) or brown (with dark skinned patients) pigment to the affected area. The body’s development of pigment in response to inflammation is a natural part of the acne healing process, but unfortunately it can also lead to the development of pigmented acne scars.

We have three different lasers used for improving the texture of the skin relative to acne scars, and the laser (or lasers) used is determined by the type of scarring, the severity of the scars, a person’s skin type, and whether the patient's lifestyle and schedule allows for social downtime during the healing process.
